Last Years Race

Last year (2007) I took part in the race with team based in Topsham, Devon on the boat Kithross II.

The team at Corpach.

The team at Corpach.

Starting in Barmouth, the first leg is around to Caernarfon, where the runners get off the boat and run 24 miles over Snowdon and back. Running to the boat at CarnafonWe then re-embark and the team then sails up the Menai Straits and over the Irish Sea to Whitehaven. Here the 2 runners hit the bikes and cycle to Ennerdale, before leaving the bikes and tackling Scafell Pike, via Blacksail Pass, on foot. After returning to Whitehaven, the team has to sail around the Mull of Galloway, past Jura and up to Corpach, outside Fort William, where the runners disembark and run the 18 miles up Ben Nevis and back.

The race is full of twists and turns. We had only just finished the run over Snowdon when I found myself helping row a 30 foot yacht up the Menai Straits, before heading into the Irish Sea facing gale force 6 winds followed by a day’s worth of intense exercise at Scafell Pike, and finally completing Ben Nevis in the snow. The sailors had to put up with lack of sleep and the constant effort of sailing the boat, usually in very demanding conditions.

We also have a support crew of two. They will provide food, water and support to the runners while they are out n the road, and are able to meet the sailors while they are in port, and help resupply the boat. They are the (frequently) unsung heroes!
